Fact families are a critical skill in the early grades. These activity sheets can be done as whole group review, an independent assessment, or as an enrichment activity for your fast finishers. The first two sheets are simpler with the fact family structure clearly defined. The next two sheets show the addends listed first and then the sum. Then two pages follow that have the fact family numbers mixed up so the student has to figure out the exact placement of each number in the addition and subtraction sentences.

Shake and Spill is a great little game for providing concrete practice with composing and decomposing numbers. It can be adapted for small numbers or larger ones. Here's a tip--put the Shake and Spill mat in something enclosed (a letter tray, box lid, etc.) to prevent the "spillage" from going everywhere!
The accompanying printables extend the activity to the representational (drawing) and abstract (symbols) stages.

This free download is a number recognition "baking" center. This Gingerbread Baking Center allows students to practice matching the number in standard form with the number in word form, as well as a ten frame illustration. To complete this center, students find the three cards that go together and place them on the baking pan. For differentiated instruction, use only the numbers and ten frames or numbers and words. To increase the difficulty, have students record their answers. This would also be a great method of assessment for number recognition.
